Indigenous People (IP) of Botolan, Zambales have successfully and peacefully chosen their representative to the Sangguniang Bayan of Botolan Zambales in a selection proceeding held on July 27, 2019 at the People’s Park, Barangay Tampo, Botolan, Zambales.
Ladie Deleon, an Aeta representative, was selected amongst the four (4) candidates representing the fifteen (15) barangays of Botolan. She will replace the incumbent Indigenous People Mandatory Representative (IPMR) Franklin Cariño who will end his term on August 9, 2019.
National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) team led by Provincial Officer of Zambales, Randy Q. Bernales facilitated the selection process, which was assisted by Atty. Roman Antonio, NCIP Legal Officer. Meanwhile, LGOO VII Melissa D. Nipal of DILG Zambales served as observer during the process. Also present during the activity is the team from the Philippine Army led by TSG Marlon Taccadan of the 33rd Mechanized Infantry Battalion.
The selection is in pursuant to Republic Act No. 8371 known as “The Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997” which recognizes the policy of the State in affording the indigenous people communities’ adequate representations in the local sanggunians at all levels.
Two hundred thirty-two (232) IP members participated in the selection proceeding. Ms. De Leon, to represent the Aeta Tribe to the Sangguniang Bayan, will assume office upon completion of documentary requirements prescribed by the NCIP Selection Guidelines.
