CITY OF Balanga, Bataan — In a ceremony held on June 9, 2025, at The Bunker Atrium, the Provincial Government of Bataan paid tribute to a group of local fishermen who turned over ₱1.5 billion worth of illegal drugs to authorities.

The activity, titled “Pagkilala sa Kabayanihan ng mga Mangingisdang Bataeño,” recognized the extraordinary integrity of 10 fishermen who, on May 29, 2025, discovered 10 sacks of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride floating in the waters of Masinloc, Zambales. Instead of remaining silent, they chose to turn over the contraband to authorities upon their return.

Philippine Coast Guard Acting Commander LTJG Jesus Mandi recounted the incident and emphasized the significance of the fishermen’s action in the ongoing fight against drug smuggling. A representative from the fishing group, moreover, shared a message underscoring their selfless choice to do what was right.

In his message, Governor Jose Enrique Garcia III commended the fishermen's actions as an extraordinary display of civic duty and modern heroism. He acknowledged the essential role of community vigilance in the fight against illegal drugs and emphasized that such victories would not be possible without the active cooperation of citizens.

Representing DILG Bataan Provincial Director and PPOC Head Secretariat Belina T. Herman, CESO V, LGOO V Ayla Theresa Bugay-Quimlat expressed gratitude and admiration for the fishermen present who did not only brave the open seas for their livelihood, but also showed remarkable courage and concern for the nation despite the risks involved. She affirmed that they are shining examples of bravery, and urged everyone present to be inspired by their story about finding ways, no matter how simple, to contribute to a safer and more orderly Bataan.
