Mayantoc, Tarlac – In celebration of the Golden Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a ceremonial lantern lighting ceremony was held at the Don Francisco Pascual Santos Memorial Auditorium, Mayantoc, Tarlac on August 8.
Having a historical relevance being the last stronghold of General Francisco Macabulos in the 1900s in the Filipino-American War, Mayantoc was chosen together with Angeles City; City of San Fernando, Pampanga; Iba, Zambales; Baler, Aurora; and the Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija by the Department of Foreign Affairs – ASEAN (DFA-ASEAN).
In the morning, the 24 barangays of Mayantoc showcased their wide array of local products like home-grown vegetables, desserts, wines, and furniture while a simple ceremony was organized in the evening to highlight the talent and culture of the people of Mayantoc.
Municipal Mayor Iluminado Pobre, Jr. took pride in the occasion saying that Mayantoc was extremely blessed to be chosen from among the multitude of cities and municipalities in the country.
Multi-media specialist Renato Orobia Durian, who represented Tarlac 1st District Representative Charlie Cojuangco encouraged the people of Mayantoc to continue showcasing their talent and culture. He added that upon the symbolic lighting of the ASEAN lantern the people's unity should likewise be ignited.
The main feat was the lighting of the six (6) foot lantern adorned with "anahaw" and "sampaguita" designs encircling the ASEAN logo, which was simultaneously done with all the 72 participating LGUs and national agencies in the country including the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
