The DILG Region III facilitated basic training on QGIS for 21 Local Government Units (LGUs) last September 16-18, 2015 at Royal Hotel in Angeles City. The training was aimed to capacitate the LGUs in terms of Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk and Vulnerability Reduction by using QGIS, an open-source technology for the creation of a wide variety of maps.

Parallel to the similar trainings in 2014, the participants were coached on the creation of local and detailed maps in consideration of geological hazards. In detail, the processes of geo-referencing, digitizing, and the usage of GPS devices were discussed. The output maps, especially upon their completion and validation, should aid in decision making and physical planning of the respective LGUs.

Housing and Homesite Regulation Officers II Ibani C. Padao and Engr. Julia Angela Mae E. Collado, from the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board coached the 3-day activity. With their guidance, the participants were able to produce the initial outputs which were the shapefile maps overlaid with existing hazard maps.
The DILG conducted the training in line with its responsibility as the Vice-Chair for Disaster Preparedness of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
